Dainan M. Skeem, Curator, 21st Century Mormon and Western Manuscripts; L Tom Perry Special Collections, BYU, 1130 Harold Bl Lee Library, Provo UT, 84602; 801-422-6230
I had prayer, got dressed, and had prayer with Debbie before driving to Alpha Graphic and picking up my reprinted 2023 Daily Journal. The first two or three months were left out of the first journal they printed. * I drove down tp BYU, Provo, and went to the special collection department in the library. I checked out the first Origins and Development of The Church of The Firstborn of the Fulness of Times. I think I may have donated it back in 1999, but I am not sure. It looks as if it was logged into the library in 1999. Dainan M. Skeem is the Curator of Special Collections. They are removing all thesis from special collections and will be placed in other areas. It took some work for Dainan to find the people who would accept. We went to lunch at BYU's food court in the student center. After lunch we went back to the library and Jenny Wheeler, administrative assistant, and Gemt van Dyk accepted the book and gave me a signed receipt. It is non-tax deductible. The thesis, Origins and Development of The Church of The Firstborn of the Fulness of Times, is in a hardcover that was submitted to the Department of History and Philosophy of Religion, College of Religious Instruction, Brigham Young University by Lyle O. Wright in 1963 for a Master of Science Degree. zin 1963. Lyle O. Wright lived at 15 Miwok Drive, San Anselmo, Calif. 94960. A young widow whose deceased husband, Bishop Jensen, was responsible for me having the thesis. Lyle's thesis was accepted by the Dept. Of History and Philosophy of Religion on April 30, 1963, by the Committee Chairman, Russell R. Rich, and Committee Member, Melton V. Backman, Jr. It was copyrighted by Lyle O. Wright in 1963. I think Robert C. Freeman is in the same position now as Russell Rich was in 1963. Lyle O. Wright‘s Master's Thesis was submitted to Brigham Young University in 1963 and was based partly on his interviews with Ross W. LeBaron. A serious-minded new Paris recruit, Ron Jarvis, requested more information directly from Ervil LeBaron in Mexico .... on 14 August 1958, they divulged their feelings to President Milton Christensen, the French Mission President, [who] tried to talk the problem through with them. ...the missionary, Elder William Tucker's cover began to unravel, and President Christensen soon realized this was something bigger than he could handle alone. On 19 August, a Tuesday, he telephoned the First Presidency in Salt Lake. The following Saturday, Apostle Hugh B. Brown arrived in Paris. --Apostle Brown concluded the meeting at 8:00 P.M. with a discourse on the powers of the adversary and the future of the French Mission. He described what had happened as the worst missionary apostasy in the history of the Church and further confided that they had discussed the possibility of closing the mission but decided the temple dedication would provide the opportunity to cleanse the mission. It led to the excommunication of nine missionaries in the French mission and the disaffection of several others. The excommunicated missionaries left by the Church to their own devices to get home, they pooled their money and obtained ship's passage. Bill Tucker joined the Lebaron group in Mexico along with seven other ousted French missionaries four elders and three sisters. Bill Tucker eventually defected from the LeBaron group and decided he was an atheist. He died in his early 30s. When I (James Leonard McAlpin) went on my mission in 1968, my cousin, Kathy Johnson, and her mother and sisters had joined the church a short time before I joined in 1966. I was in SLC to get my endowments in the temple before going into the mission field. Kathy and her husband, Rupert Prettyman, invited me over for dinner. Rupert had served his mission in France just after the excommunications. He shared more details of what he had heard. He was in France during the time he was on his mission and got his information secondhand. Lyle Oren Wright died at the age of 67. He was born on July 23, 1926, in Clawson, Utah; to Andrew and Bessie Norwood Wright. He married Helen Lila Bohleen on Oct. 17, 1947, in the Salt Lake Temple. He was a High Priest in the Centerville 7th Ward. He served a mission in Texas. He spent 42 years in the field of education, ranging from elementary teacher to university president. His last ten years of service were spent with the Utah State Office of Education. Graveside services were held on Wednesday, March 30, 1994.
As a young missionary in 1969, my companion and I was traveling as an assistant to the Mission President of the West Central States Mission with my companion. We were tracking in Mt. Helena just west of the town. The community had several small very nice new homes. One was being used a a schoolhouse for elementary students. The teacher was a young lady about our age wearing a long dress. She did not want to talk to us but sent us to her father who lived a short distance from the school. He invited us in and introduced us to two wives. They explained to us how they had divided up the daily chores. We learned the young girl's dad was also the branch president. We were invited to stay and have lunch with them. Afterward, we went into his office or study and he began to work on us trying to chip away at out testimonies. I felt a little like Jacob (chapter 6) when confined by Sherem who tried to shake him from his faith. I could not be shaken because of the many witnesses of the truth I had been given.
There are splinter groups of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of these are The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ or the Community of Christ Church. The Fundamentalists The Church of The Firstborn of the Fulness of Times The Church of Christ-Temple Lot
While my children were young we were on vacations visiting historical Church sites, we were in Independence, Missouri. Across the street from the Reorganized or Community of Christ headquarters and also across the street from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints visitor's center was a small wood frame church. It just so happened that day one of their apostles was there and took time to visit with us. Their church organization does not have a prophet only 12 apostles but they do not have a full quorum. He told us he and his members know the only true Chruch of Jesus Christ is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City. I asked him, why not be baptized and join. He said they will someday but now is not the time. They have a sacred duty to keep the temple lot property until the Lord is ready to build the temple here.
After I donated the book to the library I drove back home. When Debbie got home from Clara's softball game her team won we had dinner and worked in the flower garden and vegetable garden. I cut and trimmed my toenails today. I called and wished Matthew a happy birthday earlier. Debbie and I also sent him a happy 47th birthday text. I studied, had prayer with Debbie, and went to bed. We are going to the temple in the morning.
