Prioritized Daily Task
Lori Lynn's 58th Birthday
I woke up at 6 AM, had my personal prayer, and got ready for the day. When Debbie woke, we had prayer together. I drove the Subaru Outback up to the cabin in Timber Lakes. I shoveled about an inch of snow to get in the cabin and unloaded the two tables, six chairs, and three boxes of Thanksgiving decorations in the garage. I tried to call Elain but no answer. I took a picture of the thermostat in the cabin's 2nd-floor hall. It was turned off. I sent Michael a picture, and he said he is turning it on. I found Debbie's glass casserole bowl in the refrigerator. I meant to bring it home but forgot it. I tried to call Jason Plow about snowplowing our drive but again he did not answer. I drove down to my sister's; Elain was still sleeping but her grandson, Baylen answered the door. His mission call has been moved up a week; now the week before Christmas he goes to the MTC in Mexico City. I had a good visit with him while waiting for Elain to get ready. Baylen cooked eggs and toast for me. He told me about how the Lord turned him around, to decide to go on a mission. He said no person could have changed his mind but the Lord gave him experiences with a very good friend in Heber and an old man in a white-out storm that would have died if it had not been for Baylen being where he was at that very time. I followed Elain and we stopped on our way down to Jason's we stopped at Marcy Hess's and she went on Residents of Timber Lakes Estate Facebook page and got some names and phone numbers of those who do snow plowing in Timber Lakes. None of them service the west side, our side of the mountain. I called everyone and Eric Staten was very nice but does not work on our side of the mountain but gave me Ryan Fisher phone number, 801-602-7863. I called him and he charges $85 for plowing the drive and a retainer of $850 which he draws off. It it is a mild winter and money is left over, it carries over as a balance to the next year. Elain and I drove to Jason and met Victoria and Jason's baby daughter, Nora Belle. I took pictures and followed Elain to the Hub restaurant in Heber. Afterward, I drove back to Lehi, stopping at Home Depot to purchase a spade to help Debbie plant tulip bulbs and fill the Outback with gas for tomorrow. Debbie went shopping today with Shelby. I got home and made a pattern to plant the tulip bulbs under the fruit trees in the backyard. I sent Matthew and Michael the information on Ryan Fisher and his snowplowing information he sent. I watched college football on TV. Some of my favorites are GA, AL, BYU, TX, and TN. Debbie made dinner for Kylee and us. Shelby went over to watch BYU and UT with Bradley and his parents. The game started at about 8:15 PM. She is coming back, picking up the clothes she washed and dried, and spending the night with us. I had my personal and before going to bed at about 10:30 PM at half-time Debbie and I had prayer.
NOTE: “Of all influences that cause men to choose wrong, selfishness is undoubtedly the strongest. Where there is selfishness, the Spirit of the Lord is absent. By Elder William R. Bradford
Elder ElRay L. Christiansen told about one of his distant Scandinavian relatives who joined the Church. He was quite well-to-do and sold his lands and stock in Denmark to come to Utah with his family. For a while he did well as far as the Church and its activities were concerned, and he prospered financially. However, he became so caught up in his possessions that he forgot about his purpose in coming to America. The bishop visited him and implored him to become active as he used to be. The years passed and some of his brethren visited him and said: “Now, Lars, the Lord was good to you when you were in Denmark. He has been good to you since you have come here. … We think now, since you are growing a little older, that it would be well for you to spend some of your time in the interests of the Church. After all, you can’t take these things with you when you go.”
Jolted by this remark, the man replied, “Vell, den, I vill not go.”11 But he did! And so will all of us! Barney Fife an actor on The Andy Griffith Show said "Take it with me? ……I'll be lucky if I get to go myself!" is a line from the TV show Selfishness and greed bring bitterness and contention; on the other hand sacrifice and giving bring peace and contentment.
When my Great Aunt Elender Smith died, a dispute developed even though there was not a lot to dispute about. Feelings of selfness of greed caused a rift in the family. None of the airs had worked as Aunt Elender. Her family for generations had worked on the farm. Fortunately, the dispute was isolated and ended with that generation but many times it doesn’t, and what a shame it becomes to the family when the father or mother, aunt or uncle only wanted good for their loved ones.
